ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, is one of the ligaments in the center of your knee. There's an ACL and a PCL that cross like fingers. Cruciate implies crossing, so the anterior cruciate ligament is a knee ligament that stabilizes for cutting activities. It is commonly injured in non-contact injuries in basketball, and soccer, or in basketball. In fact, it's seven times more likely to happen in a female athlete than in a male athlete, in a competitive athlete, or an active person that requires surgery for reconstruction to rebuild the ACL and make a graft to restore stability to the knee. What are some common sports injuries?

As an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, I see a fair amount of sports injuries. Common sports injuries would be meniscus tears or ACL tears, those are the most common for the knee. For the shoulder, it would be rotator cuff tears or labral tears. All those could be somewhat diagnosed by physical examination, but an MRI is always helpful to help alienate the actual pathology. What is arthritis?

Arthritis revolves around the joint. A joint is where two bones come together and the coating is called cartilage. Articular cartilage can be worn off by disease, by wear and tear over time, by injury, or by various causes that lead to arthritis or loss of cartilage at the joint that can cause pain, stiffness, decreased function, and need for healing. What is a meniscus tear?

Common injury in sports medicine for the knee specifically would be a meniscus tear. There's a medial and lateral meniscus. They're shaped like a C, so two C’s together, make an O, so it's an O ring in your knee that helps stabilize and provide short shock absorption. When there's a twisting injury or a significant injury, such as in a sports contact injury they could be torn, causing pain and swelling, they typically need surgery, and they're important for shock absorption such that if you have a tear with or without surgery, there's an increased risk of future arthritis. What is the recovery time for hip, knee, and shoulder replacements?

The knee replacement is much more painful than a hip or shoulder. It's got a lot of rehabilitation, and in general, I would tell a patient you're back to normal function at about the three-month mark, but you are walking the day of surgery. For a total hip replacement, there's less stress on the range of motion for rehabilitation. That makes it much easier, rehabilitation. More of the two months mark I would estimate for the average person. For a shoulder replacement, that's usually done as an outpatient surgery, but based on the type of surgery, you could move the shoulder within one week to four weeks, and hopefully recovering in a much shorter time frame than a hip or knee.
