The diagnosis of cancer is very challenging, and my advice to my patients is that they are not alone in this journey. We are all here to support them every step of the way. Undergoing radiation therapy for cancer can be challenging, but we are here to help. Patients come here on a daily basis, and we check in with them to address any questions or concerns they may have. Once a week, I meet with patients to discuss how their treatment is going, any side effects, and whether things are improving or worsening. Additionally, we provide a call number so patients can reach us after hours or on the weekend if needed. There are many misconceptions about radiation therapy in the community, and it is often not well understood. When patients hear they need radiation therapy, it can be a scary experience. My role as a radiation oncologist is to educate my patients about the radiation process, explain what it entails, and walk them through every step of their treatment. Each radiation treatment plan is unique to the patient. Even if two patients have the same diagnosis, they won’t receive the same treatment. The plan is dictated by pathology, personal history, and many other factors, resulting in a personalized treatment for each patient. I am an active member of key radiation oncology societies, both nationally and internationally, that develop guidelines for treating cancer patients. I am also involved in research projects to explore more innovative treatment approaches for our patients. These guidelines and updates come regularly, and it’s my job to stay on top of them to ensure we provide the best possible care. Thanks for watching, and I look forward to meeting you here at BASS Cancer Center. For more information, please visit our website at basscancercenter.com.
