No, vein stripping is no longer necessary or performed. There are various treatments available today that can be done in the office under local anesthetic. The most common procedure is radiofrequency ablation of the superficial veins, such as the greater saphenous or the lesser saphenous vein, and any refluxing perforator veins. This is done using a catheter-based technique with heat, which is very well tolerated. Recently, veins can also be treated using a catheter-based sealant, which requires minimal local injection, typically only one site for access. All of these procedures are done in the office with minimal to no discomfort, guided by ultrasound.
