Christopher Coufal

Dr. Chris Coufal is a Board Certified and Fellowship trained Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon specializing in Adult and Pediatric Fracture Care. With over 25 years of clinical experience, he is recognized for his expertise in the treatment of Multiple Complex Fractures, Pelvic and Acetabular Injuries, Ilizarov External Fixation, Acute Trauma Management, Periarticular and Periprosthetic Fracture Care, Geriatric Hip Fractures, Musculoskeletal Infections, and Post-Traumatic Limb Reconstruction. He is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA).

Dr. Coufal earned his Medical Degree from the University of Texas where he also completed his Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. He moved to Michigan for a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma at Henry Ford Hospital and Detroit Receiving Hospital. His passion for Orthopaedic Trauma stems from the joy he finds in restoring injured patients to their previous level of activity and supporting their return to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Throughout his career Dr. Coufal has witnessed significant changes in his Orthopaedic Surgery practice. In 1998 he started working with a group of 5 surgeons. Over time it grew to 30 and three years ago to 80 doctors. Dr. Coufal found that the evolving corporate, mega-group setting made it difficult for him to practice medicine in the way he was trained and the way he loves. Recently, he made the decision to establish a solo practice with his wife, Teresa as his practice manager. Rather than routing patient calls to another country, she will answer the phone and engage with patients directly. In this traditional setting, Dr. Coufal honors his Hippocratic Oath to Patient-Centered Medicine. With long appointment slots, Dr. Coufal takes time to fully examine each patient. He personally casts fractures, injects joint medications, and removes surgical staples. He takes pride in seeing his patients walk again after surgery, always on the lookout for anything else that he can do to make his repair perfect.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Coufal enjoys digital and film photography, scuba diving, underwater photography, alpine skiing, cycling, hiking, and traveling to national parks. Most of all he cherishes time spent with Teresa and his children Mark, and Nick, and Sarah.
