Men’s Health Month: 5 Things Every Man Should Do for Better Health

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to raise awareness about preventable health issues and encourage men of all ages to take charge of their physical and mental wellbeing. Whether you’re in your 20s, 40s, or 70s, staying healthy isn’t just about lifting weights—it’s about taking care of the whole you.

Here are five essential ways to prioritize your health this month and beyond.

1. Schedule Your Annual Physical

Regular checkups with a Primary Care Provider (PCP) can detect potential health issues early—when they’re easier to treat. During your annual exam, your doctor may check:

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Blood sugar (diabetes screening)
  • Prostate health
  • Weight and body mass index
  • Colon cancer screening (if age-appropriate)

Many conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes don’t cause symptoms until damage is already done. That’s why preventive care matters.

2. Get Moving—And Stay Moving

Regular physical activity can lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers. Aim for:

  • 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week (e.g., brisk walking, biking)
  • Muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week

If you’re not a gym fan, try swimming, hiking, or home workouts. Movement is movement!

3. Check Your Mental Health, Too

Men are statistically less likely to seek help for depression, anxiety, or stress. But your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

Warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored include:

  • Chronic fatigue or insomnia
  • Feeling numb or irritable
  • Loss of interest in work, family, or hobbies
  • Thoughts of hopelessness or suicide

Talking to a PCP or therapist is a sign of strength—not weakness.

4. Cut Back on Alcohol and Tobacco

Drinking in moderation is key. Excessive alcohol use increases your risk for liver disease, certain cancers, and accidents. Tobacco use, including vaping, remains one of the leading causes of preventable death in men.

If you need support quitting, BASS Medical Group can help connect you with cessation tools and medical guidance.

5. Know Your Family History

Your risk for conditions like heart disease, prostate cancer, or diabetes may be higher if close relatives have been diagnosed. Share this information with your provider so they can personalize your care plan.
