
Gregory Rhodes, MD, FACS
Biography
Dr. Gregory Alan Rhodes, MD, FACS, was the founder and former president of BASS Medical Group and a highly respected vascular and trauma surgeon whose vision and leadership shaped the organization into one of Northern California’s leading independent multispecialty medical groups.
Born on July 30, 1947, in Modesto, California, Dr. Rhodes was a sixth-generation Northern Californian with deep roots in the region he would ultimately serve throughout his career. He graduated from Davis High School in 1965 before attending the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, graduating with honors in 1969.
Dr. Rhodes received his medical degree from the University of California, Davis in 1975. He went on to complete a General Surgery residency at the University of California, San Diego from 1976 to 1980, serving as Chief Resident. In 1981, he completed a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, where he refined his surgical expertise and commitment to patient-centered care.
In 1982, Dr. Rhodes returned to Northern California and established a private surgical practice in Walnut Creek, which he maintained for more than four decades. During this time, he became widely known not only for his clinical excellence, but also for his dedication to improving healthcare systems for patients, physicians, and healthcare professionals alike.
From 1984 to 1989, Dr. Rhodes served as Chairman of the Contra Costa County Emergency Medical Care Committee, where he played a pivotal role in planning the county’s first trauma center at John Muir Hospital. He later served as a trauma surgeon at John Muir, further advancing emergency and surgical care in the region.
In 2009, Dr. Rhodes founded Bay Area Surgical Specialists (BASS) Medical Group with a bold vision: to provide exceptional, patient-centered medical care while preserving physician autonomy and fostering collaboration across specialties. Under his leadership, BASS grew rapidly into a premier multispecialty medical group, expanding access to high-quality care throughout Northern California. He served as President of BASS Medical Group from 2009 until his retirement in 2022 and continued contributing to the organization through service on its Quality Committee until 2024.
Dr. Rhodes’ legacy at BASS is defined by compassion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to patients. In recognition of his profound impact, BASS Medical Group renamed its flagship cancer facility the Gregory Rhodes, M.D. Cancer Center in 2025, ensuring that his dedication to excellence and humanity continues to guide patient care for generations to come.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Rhodes was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished time with his family, coached his children’s sports teams for more than 20 years, and shared his love of the outdoors, environmental stewardship, and lifelong learning with his children and grandchildren. A passionate San Francisco Giants fan, he delighted in passing along stories of championship seasons and creating lasting family traditions.
Dr. Rhodes passed away on September 27, 2024, leaving behind an enduring legacy of leadership, service, and compassion. His vision remains embedded in the mission and values of BASS Medical Group and in the countless lives he touched throughout his career.
