Tips to Lead a Healthy and Happy Lifestyle When Having Diabetes

To make it blunt, having diabetes can be difficult. It means a lot of lifestyle changes and new daily habits that need to be implemented. Whether you have recently been diagnosed or have been trying to find a balance in your life, there is hope. In fact, there are numerous things that you can implement to properly manage your diabetes while still enjoying your life. We have put together a list of tips that can help you have a happy and healthy life while living with diabetes

A Good Diet for Diabetes

One of the most beneficial things you can do when having diabetes is to eat a well balanced diet. This does not at all mean that it has to be a boring diet. Just make sure you are eating healthy based foods like vegetables, proteins, and whole grains. Ideally, you should avoid processed foods as much as possible, as they have a higher glycemic index. This simply means that processed foods will affect your blood sugar levels more. You should try to eat three well balanced meals a day with similar amounts of carbs in each one.

Kick the Smoking Habit

If you do not smoke, great! You are already ahead of the game. If you are a smoker, then now would be the time to finally kick the habit, as it can affect your blood sugar levels. Furthermore, smoking increases the risk of having complications from diabetes. These complications can include conditions like peripheral neuropathy, heart and kidney disease, poor blood flow which can lead to infections to amputations, and more.

Exercise

If you do not exercise regularly, you should try to start doing so. Not only will this make you feel better and improve your mood, but it can help lower your blood sugar. In addition, it can help drop some pounds, which is very beneficial for diabetes. Furthermore, exercise makes your body more sensitive to insulin, which can make it easier for it to do its job regulating your blood sugar levels.

Keep a Snack Around

Low blood sugar can bring a whole slew of symptoms that can make things a lot harder than they need to be. These symptoms include sweating, dizziness, confusion, irritability, and more. This is why it is important to keep good snacks around that can help you boost your blood sugar quickly. Good snacks for this can include honey, fruit, juice, and glucose tablets. Keep these near so that if you start to feel the symptoms of low blood sugar, you can get yourself back to normal quickly.

Monitor Your Alcohol Intake

Too much alcohol can be dangerous for your blood sugar level, as it can cause it to drop significantly. It basically comes down to too much pressure on the liver. When you take in too much alcohol, your liver has to work hard to remove it when it should be regulating your blood sugar. Furthermore, drunkenness and low blood sugar can have similar symptoms which can lead to you not addressing low blood sugar when you need to. This is not to say that you cannot have any alcohol, but keep it moderate.
