Conditions that require such focused care are illnesses or injuries that threaten life such as those that might occur with a car accident, severe burns, drug-resistant infection, severe bleeding, a heart attack, a stroke, kidney failure, and heart failure, among others.

Critical Care Medicine physicians along with a team of other specialized healthcare providers (including critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and more), provide patients with close, careful, round-the-clock treatment and monitoring.

The role of the Critical Care team is to provide care that supports a patient’s life along with other intensive treatments to address challenging, complex medical situations. The goal is to effectively administer the immediate and long-term care necessary to help patients to, hopefully, overcome their acute illnesses and eventually return to previous health.

Our Critical Care Medicine specialists are physicians who focus on the care of our most critically ill patients. Often called “intensivists,” these rigorously trained doctors work in our intensive care units and are experts not only in the conditions affecting their patients but also in the innovations and technology used to care for them. Some Critical Care Medical specialists are anesthesiologists, cardiologists (heart doctors), pediatricians, pulmonologists (lung doctors), or surgeons, as well.

In addition to providing highly specialized care for their patients, BASS’ Critical Care physicians are also sensitive to the needs of the families and loved ones being affected as well, albeit differently. Cognizant of the unique issues surrounding severe illness, our Critical Care Medicine specialists facilitate empathetic discussions on what to expect and planning for the future with appropriate referrals to support services and counseling.

BASS Medical Group’s Critical Care Medicine specialists care for patients in severe life-threatening situations including, but not limited to, those with:

  • Acute respiratory failure or acute respiratory distress
  • Septic shock
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Kidney failure
  • Neurologic disorders
  • Kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lungs, or bone marrow transplants
  • Major surgical procedures such as coronary revascularization and valve replacements, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, neuro-interventional procedures, and extensive spine repairs
