Radiofrequency Ablation Therapy: Recommendations for a Prompt Recovery
October 19, 2023

If you need treatment to remove varicose veins, radiofrequency ablation therapy (RFA) is an option that is often quick with few side effects. Unlike most other varicose vein treatments, radiofrequency ablation therapy is performed using heat from an electric current. Most patients can walk after the procedure, making it a great option if you want to get back to daily activities as soon as possible. Following certain recommendations can ensure you have a prompt recovery.

How does radiofrequency ablation therapy work?

Radiofrequency ablation uses a catheter to apply an electric current to your veins. This electric current uses heat to burn the veins, causing them to visibly disappear. This treatment causes scar tissue to form, preventing blood from entering the vein.

When blood is intercepted from the vein, it eventually fades away but may take a few months to completely disappear. Because RFA is an outpatient procedure, you will be allowed to go home afterward. You may experience a gripping feeling in your leg that could last a few days. It is also common to feel cramping, swelling, and bruising.

Recovery Strategies

To minimize these effects, there are a few things you can do for a swift recovery. In most cases, you will be able to walk shortly after radiofrequency ablation therapy. Going for daily walks, even for 10 to 15 minutes, can improve circulation and lead to a faster and healthier recovery.

Dietary changes can also improve circulation. Increasing fiber intake and decreasing sodium are some of the best effective dietary changes to make during recovery. Try incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet since they are high in fiber and do not contain any unnatural sugars. Try to avoid soups and sauces that are high in sodium and sugar.

For most radiofrequency ablation therapy, you can return to work within a day or two. However, if your job involves heavy lifting or strenuous activity, you may want to consider taking a few more days off as it can lead to setbacks during recovery by causing blood clots. If you are experiencing any post-treatment side effects such as bruising, swelling, or cramping, heaving lifting can worsen these symptoms. Make sure to contact your doctor if you have a fever, bleeding, or need a pain reliever. For light pain, apply ice or take an over-the-counter medication.

Radiofrequency has many benefits compared to other varicose vein treatments. As with other ablative procedures, it is a fairly simple process but does come with a few risks. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor to find out which varicose vein treatment is right for you.
