East Bay Area Residents: How Radiofrequency Ablation Therapy Works
October 19, 2023

When they first form, spider and varicose veins can be a cosmetic nuisance. Over time, they can become quite painful. Many people seek treatment to get rid of these types of veins because of the pain.

There are several types of treatment available for spider and varicose veins, depending on their severity. If they are still in a somewhat early stage, then conservative treatment options may be available. Conservative treatments are non-invasive and can be done without a long recovery time. One such type of treatment is radiofrequency ablation therapy.

What Is Radiofrequency Ablation (RA)?

Radiofrequency ablation is a form of treatment that heats up and contracts spider and varicose veins. The vein will be numbed and then a catheter will be passed through it while radiofrequency is applied. As the radiofrequency is applied, it will help the vein to contract. Eventually, the vein will be reabsorbed by the body.

How Radiofrequency Ablation Is Used in Treatment

For further detail, here is how an average RA treatment appointment will go. When your treatment begins, you will lie down and the targeted leg will be numbed. Then, the doctor will make a small hole to insert the catheter. The doctor will use ultrasound to guide the catheter through the vein. Once in position, the catheter will be slowly pulled out and it will apply the radiofrequency on the way out. As the catheter sends out heat with this frequency, the vein will close. Then, the catheter will be removed and a bandage or compression stocking may be put on.

The entire treatment will typically take around 45 to 60 minutes. If you include the time for preparation and recovery, it can be around one to three hours. Either way, you will be able to complete the treatment and go home on the same day.

Before undergoing the procedure, you must keep your doctor informed of your health and habits. Be sure to tell them if you are a smoker, pregnant, breastfeeding, or have allergies. Also, let them know what substances you have ingested or ingest regularly. This includes prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, street drugs, and any other substances that you take.

At-Home Recovery After RA

As mentioned above, you will be able to go home the same day after your treatment, but it is important to take the proper steps when you get home. You need to follow the doctor’s orders and recommendations to ensure that everything heals properly. Properly care for the incision site and check for any sign of infection, change your bandage, avoid heavy activity or exercise, take all medications, and anything else your doctor recommends. Your doctor will lay out exactly what you need to do at home and you must follow their directions.

If any complications or warning signs arise, you should contact your doctor. Take note if you develop a fever, signs of infection, tingling or numbness in the leg, chest pain, or severe pain and swelling. Do not put these conditions off if they begin. Let your doctor know right away so that they can treat the issue or give you a recommendation.
