Varicose Vein Sclerotherapy: What to Expect During the Treatment
October 19, 2023

Varicose veins can cause issues such as low self-confidence, pain, and discomfort. If you have varicose veins, sclerotherapy may be a good treatment option for you. The procedure has been around for many years and can be performed by doctors, dermatologists, and vein specialists like those here at BASS Vein Center. It’s important to note that not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure, so you must schedule an appointment with one of our specialists to determine if sclerotherapy treatment is the right option for your varicose veins.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment option that is used to eliminate varicose veins. The process can be done in-office and usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Sclerotherapy treatment produces minimal pain and discomfort. Most patients can return to their usual activities on the same day or within a few days after the procedure.

Some people are not eligible for this type of varicose vein treatment. Pregnant women and some people who have had blood clots in the past can not have sclerotherapy. If you are interested in sclerotherapy but have had blood clots before, a vein specialist here at BASS Vein Center will need to perform an evaluation firstbefore approving you for treatment.

For most patients, sclerotherapy is a highly effective treatment for eliminating varicose veins. While it may take some time to see the procedure’s final results, most patients are pleased with their sclerotherapy treatment outcome.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Before your procedure, you will be advised to avoid taking certain medications. That usually includes anti-inflammatories such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Your doctor will let you know which specific medication you should avoid before treatment. Do not apply any powder or lotion to the area being treated, and be sure to bring along your compression socks or stockings to wear after treatment.

During treatment, the vein specialist will numb the area around the affected vein. They will then insert a fine needle directly into the vein. The needle will allow a special solution to coat the inside of the vein’s walls. The solution causes the walls of the vein to become sticky and then collapse. The collapse causes the vein to close permanently so that no more blood will flow through it or become blocked by it. The body then reroutes the blood to a healthier vein located nearby. Over time, the damaged vein will turn into scar tissue and be absorbed by the body, eventually disappearing from view.

The process takes around three to five minutes per vein, depending on the severity of the issue. The number of veins a patient can have treated during a single procedure depends on the patient’s overall health condition.

After the procedure, patients are allowed to return home and usually go back to their daily activities. However, it is advised that they avoid anything strenuous for at least a few days. Side effects to expect after sclerotherapy include itching, bruising, and redness around the injection site that should go away soon aftertreatment.
