Varicose Vein Management: Tips to Start a Conservative Vein Treatment
October 19, 2023

Millions of people are currently dealing with the difficulties of varicose veins. Not only are these veins a cosmetic issue, but they can also be incredibly painful. Fortunately, there are many methods of treatment for varicose veins. While there are surgical and outpatient-based forms of treatment, there are conservative methods of treatment that can help as well. These conservative forms of treatment can be done at home and in your daily life and can often provide great relief of varicose veins. Check out the tips below to help you begin conservative varicose vein treatment.

Lifestyle Changes to Improve Varicose Veins

The initial steps in conservative vein treatment involve lifestyle changes. The first of these is to begin exercising regularly if you do not already do so. Exercise improves blood circulation, which helps prevent blood from pooling in the legs. The second steps involve diet changes. The foods that you eat can directly affect your body. The idea here is to eat foods, such as whole foods and increased protein and fiber, that contribute to a healthier vascular system.

If you are overweight or obese, then losing weight is another step that you can take to begin conservative treatment for varicose veins. Extra weight adds pressure to veins, which makes it harder for the blood to circulate back where it needs to. Ideally, as you make dietary changes and exercise regularly, weight loss will follow. These three changes can make a huge difference in varicose veins.

Compression Stockings Can Make a Huge Difference

Compression stockings are one of the most beneficial methods of conservative varicose vein treatment. These stockings compress the veins and improve circulation, which makes it difficult for blood to pool in the extremities. Compression stockings can also work wonders to reduce swelling in the legs, providing relief from some of the pain associated with varicose veins. There are numerous types and strengths of compression socks available. Local pharmacies will have a decent array of these stockings available, but you can also get a prescription from your doctor for a higher strength stocking.

Positioning

Your position is important when it comes to helping varicose veins, and there are a couple of practices that can be beneficial. First of all, try to avoid standing or sitting in one way or spot for too long, as this makes it easier for blood to pool in the legs. Instead, just try to adjust your position from time to time to keep blood flowing as best as possible. Secondly, when you have time, elevate your legs while laying down or sitting. Raise them above your heart a few times a day to help increase your circulation.

Consult with Your Doctor

The most important thing about beginning conservative vein treatment is to consult with your doctor. Conservative treatment is the most effective for light or mild cases of varicose veins. If your doctor sees that you have a more severe case, they may recommend a different form of treatment to address the problem. It is always better to talk to your doctor to ensure that you receive the best form of treatment to address your particular issues.
