How to Treat Leg Pain From Varicose Veins
October 19, 2023

Varicose veins are troublesome for millions of people in the United States. Not only are they an issue cosmetically, but they can also be very painful for many people. Fortunately, there are several ways to treat varicose veins, including home-based treatments. Of course, there are also more intensive treatments if the varicose veins continue to be problematic. We have put together several varicose vein treatments that can help you resolve the leg pain that they may cause.

Home Remedies for Varicose Veins

Ideally, home remedies for varicose veins can help you greatly ease the pain they can cause. Remember, a lot of varicose vein pain home remedies will require regular application as opposed to spot pain treatment. There are several methods that you can try at home, including:

Leg Elevation for Rapid Relief

If you are looking for some level of quick relief, then you should try elevating your legs. This helps blood flow circulate back to the heart and it also helps the valves in your veins function. You can place your legs up on a table or lay down in bed and rest them on pillows. If you do this for around 15 minutes or so, you should begin to experience some level of pain relief.

Exercise Helps Blood Circulation

Exercise can be great for varicose vein relief, as it greatly improves blood circulation. It can also lower blood pressure, which can help provide some relief from varicose veins. There are several lighter exercises that you can try, such as walking, swimming, or biking.

Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are one of the most efficient home remedies for varicose veins. They apply pressure to the legs, which helps the veins move blood back toward the heart instead of pooling. Compression stockings are readily available online or in various pharmacies. This is not a spot treatment, though. It will not be as effective if you only wear the stocking when you experience pain in the legs. Rather, you should put them on in the morning and take them off before you go to bed.

Weight Loss

If you are overweight, losing weight is one of the best things you can do to relieve pain from varicose veins. Extra weight places a lot more pressure on the veins in your legs, which increases swelling and pain.

Non-Surgical Varicose Vein Treatment Approaches

There are also some forms of non-surgical treatment that you can get for varicose veins. These can often be effective if home remedies do not seem to help.

Sclerotherapy - Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a chemical into problematic veins to close them off. Unfortunately, this is only effective on smaller veins like spider veins.

Endovenous Ablation Treatment - Ablation treatment involves inserting a catheter into the vein, then heating it and pulling it backwards. As the heated catheter is pulled, it will close off the vein behind it. There are two types of ablation: radiofrequency and laser. This treatment can be effective for larger problematic veins.
