3 Varicose Veins Prevention Tips
October 19, 2023

There are a lot of factors that can cause varicose veins. The most common include pregnancy, standing for long periods of time, and obesity. Varicose veins are typically caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins. When the cardiovascular system is working properly, the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood which is delivered to the body through large vessels called arteries. It is the responsibility of the smaller vessels, called veins, to return the deoxygenated blood back to the heart so the circulatory process can be repeated. When the veins fail to usher the blood back up toward the heart, the blood begins to pool in the veins. This causes the veins to appear enlarged, twisted, and bulging at the surface of the skin.

Varicose veins can also cause skin discoloration in the affected area. While they can be merely a cosmetic issue, sometimes they can be more severe and cause pain and discomfort. Some people report the following symptoms when it comes to painful varicose veins:

  • A feeling of heaviness
  • A burning sensation
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle cramps
  • Itching sensation near the affected veins

Varicose Veins Causes

Many varicose veins causes can be remedied with lifestyle changes and healthy self practices. While genetics does play a role in the development of varicose veins, these same lifestyle changes and practices can be implemented to mitigate your risk—even with a strong family history.

Below is a list of the top 3 tips to help prevent varicose veins.

1. Diet

Eating a high-fiber, low-salt diet has been shown to improve bowel function and reduce water retention. When bowels aren’t functioning properly, constipation can occur. This leads to straining in order to pass stool which creates intra abdominal pressure. This pressure aggravates damaged vein valves, making varicose veins worse. Water retention is another culprit. The increase in blood volume creates extra pressure on the vein valves, resulting in further valve irritation. Adding flavonoids to your diet has been linked to better cardiovascular health. It’s been shown to improve blood circulation and reduce arterial pressure. Foods that are great sources of flavonoids include citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges, berries like blueberries and strawberries, leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, and garlic.

2. Exercise

Physical activity is another great in-home treatment option—and prevention method—for varicose veins. The more movement in your daily activities, the better your blood will circulate. Even low impact exercises—like walking, swimming, cycling, stretching—can help reverse or reduce the appearance and pain associated with varicose veins. Plus, when you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which trigger a positive feeling in the body. So it’s a win-win.

3. Intentional Daily Practices

There are a couple of things you can incorporate into your daily life that will help prevent varicose veins. First, taking breaks from prolonged sitting or standing. Moving about frequently helps to encourage better circulation and healthier blood flow. If you have varicose veins, remembering to elevate your legs when you are sitting or lying down can help improve blood flow, as well. Being intentional about taking these minor actions throughout your day will lead to a good set of daily practices to heal your varicose veins.

How To Prevent Varicose Veins

So, now that you know how to prevent varicose veins, you can put some of these tips into practice. However, sometimes at-home remedies and lifestyle changes just aren’t enough. You might consider a trip to the doctor or varicose vein specialist if you begin to notice that your varicose veins are worsening. Varicose veins can also cause feelings of insecurity. If this is the case for you, you can opt to have them treated to decrease their visibility or even render them invisible.
