Signs You'd Be a Good Candidate for Gastric Bypass Surgery

Millions of people across the country are struggling with obesity. Not only does obesity itself hinder daily life, but it can also lead to a slew of other medical issues and complications. Many of those struggling with obesity cannot seem to shed the weight no matter what diet or exercise that they try. This is where they may begin considering bariatric surgery like a gastric bypass. Gastric bypass surgery is not for everyone, which is why we have put together a list of five signs that you may be a good candidate for the procedure.

You Have Tried Weight Loss Through Other Means

Many people have tried numerous diets or exercise regimens and have seen little to no results. Even if diet and exercise have made some impact, they struggled to keep the weight off. This can often be a sign that weight loss surgery should be the next option. Keep in mind that getting gastric bypass still requires lifestyle changes in order to maintain long-term success.

You Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) Over 40

Individuals with a BMI of over 40 who need to lose 80 pounds or more are ideal candidates for weight loss surgery. In fact, those who meet this threshold will almost always qualify for the surgery.

You Have a BMI of 35 or Higher and Have Health Issues Related to Weight

Those who have a BMI of 35 will not immediately qualify for surgery, but if they have weight-related health issues as well, this can change the gastric bypass requirements. With severe weight-related health conditions, an individual with a BMI between 35 and 39 may be considered as a candidate. Weight-related health conditions can include hypertension, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, and diabetes.

You Are Motivated to Make the Necessary Lifestyle Changes Before and After Gastric Bypass

There is almost no point in getting gastric bypass if you are not going to make the associated lifestyle changes as well. You need to have the motivation to stick to a diet and exercise to ensure the long-term results of gastric bypass. Falling back into old habits and behavior can be detrimental to your health. It is possible to regain an unhealthy amount of weight even after gastric bypass, so do not go in thinking that it is a free pass to eat and live however you want afterward.

You Have Taken the Time to Get Educated About Gastric Bypass

You must understand all of the lifestyle changes, benefits, and risks of gastric bypass before you jump right into it. You will have to stick to a diet and take vitamins to supplement your diet for the rest of your life. This surgery is not simply a way to get skinny and not have to worry about it anymore. You need to understand that it is a lifelong commitment to your weight and health. Gastric bypass surgery is quite safe in the modern age, but you should know the risks as well, just in case.
