Who is at a High Risk for Varicose Veins?

Although they can affect anyone, varicose veins are more common in women than men. That is because of the various changes women go through during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. If you have a family history of varicose veins or if you sit or stand for long periods each day, you are also at a higher risk.

Age is another common risk factor. As we get older, our veins naturally start to weaken and can become damaged much easier. Aging causes wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help to regulate the flow of blood.

During pregnancy, women have a higher volume of blood in their bodies. This helps to support the growing baby but it can also cause enlarged veins to occur in the legs. The hormonal changes that take effect during pregnancy can also contribute to this change.

Being overweight also adds more pressure to your legs which also places more stress and pressure on your veins.

What Varicose Veins Treatment Options Are Available?

Sclerotherapy

With this procedure, small or medium varicose veins are injected with a solution that helps to close the damaged veins. Foam may also be injected to close the vein and seal it off. A few weeks after the treatment, the veins should fade away and disappear. Sclerotherapy does not require the use of anesthesia and the procedure can take place in-office.

Laser Treatment

Laser treatment used to close off smaller varicose veins and spider veins is highly effective and non-invasive. This treatment works by sending beams of light into the veins. This causes the vein to fade and later disappear. There are no incisions or needles used during this process.

Catheter-Assisted Procedures

With this type of treatment, a small thin tube known as a catheter is inserted into the large vein. The vein is heated using the catheter and either radio frequency or laser energy. While the catheter is pulled out, the heat destroys the vein as it causes it to collapse and seal closed. This procedure is often preferred and recommended for larger varicose veins.

High Ligation or Vein Stripping

With this procedure, the vein is tied off at the area right before it joins with a deep vein. Then the vein is removed using small incisions. This is typically performed as an outpatient procedure.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

During this procedure, the doctor removes smaller varicose veins by making small punctures. Only the area of the leg where the punctures are made is numbed. This is performed as an outpatient procedure and usually causes minimal scarring.

Endoscopic Vein Surgery

This surgical procedure is often only needed for advanced cases where the varicose veins result in leg ulcers. It is also used if other techniques to remove varicose veins fail. The surgeon closes and removes the vein using a tiny, thin video camera and by making small incisions.
