Varicose Veins Treatment: What Are the Advantages of VenaSeal?

If you have varicose veins and have started researching solutions, you may have discovered VenaSeal as an option for your varicose veins treatment. But what is VenaSeal? This is an innovative form of vein treatment that uses cyanoacrylate to close and seal varicose veins. This may sound simple enough, but we are going to break down the process—and what you can expect from the VenaSeal closure system for your varicose veins.

What Is Cyanoacrylate?

Cyanoacrylates have been around since the 1950s and are used to repair skin incisions. Many doctors turn to this treatment for wounds to avoid sutures, but it has also been used as a medical-grade glue across various areas of medicine, including cosmetic procedures, orthopedic care, dentistry, and ophthalmic surgeries. This simple, quick, and easy solution is so effective and non-invasive, doctors will even use cyanoacrylates on children with skin lacerations.

For varicose vein treatments, cyanoacrylate is used to effectively and specifically shut down the main saphenous vein, which is located in your thigh. Once the vein is glued shut during the procedure, the vein begins to harden. While the vein closes and becomes scar tissue in the body, it does not disappear itself. Instead, the blood inside the vein is reabsorbed naturally into the body.

The Treatment & the Advantages

Other treatment options will sometimes require numbing or anesthesia to treat the affected area, but VenaSeal is an exception. It is not as invasive as other treatments for varicose veins, and does not require immediate post-treatment plans, like compression stockings or medication.

A small amount of cyanoacrylate is placed into a catheter, and when the vein is closed, the body naturally reroutes the blood to other healthy veins. The procedure is quick and easy, and you can return to your usual activities on the same day. You will be able to resume normal exercise within 48 hours of the treatment. An ultrasound will also be scheduled for a few weeks after your treatment to ensure the veins have been treated appropriately.

Here are some tips to get ready for your treatment:

  • If you shave, avoid shaving your legs before the treatment to prevent any small abrasions on your skin.
  • Wear loose trousers or slacks to your appointment for easy access to the area and no restriction on your skin after the treatment.
  • You will also want to wear comfortable shoes to walk in, as your doctor will advise you to walk for 10 minutes after the procedure—before going home. This is to make sure you can walk without restriction.
  • Speaking of walking, your doctor will also recommend you walk 10-15 minutes per day following your treatment to encourage blood flow.
  • Once your procedure is finished, a medical assistant will provide you with post-treatment instructions and documents so you have a point of reference during post-care.

Aside from being an effective form of treatment, the advantages speak for themselves. There is minimal discomfort to the procedure, since injections and local anesthesia are not required. Tight-fitting compression stockings and socks are not necessary, and there is no chance of nerve damage or thermal injuries from the treatment. Minimal time off from work means you are back to your normal activities before you know it, especially since hospital admission is not needed for the VenaSeal procedure.
